Honors Convocation

On the night of Thursday April 26th, 2018, members of the Saint Rose High School community gathered in the Saint Rose Church to celebrate many students from our school.  The reason for this special night is to induct the new members into the World Language Honors Society along with the giving of science fair awards and honoring a few other students.

The service began with the procession of the new members of the Language Honors Society.  After Mrs. Collin, the new Saint Rose High School campus minister, led the students in prayer, the honoring began.  First, Mrs. Kain led the new members of the Language Honors Society as they made their promises to the club with the “Profession of Trust”.  After each member was called up by name, they became official members of the Saint Rose Language Honors Society.

Next, three members of the Lab Assistants Club were honored for their devotion.  They were each given small gifts to show that all their hard work with the science department has been appreciated.

Finally, the Forensics Science, Honors Physics, and Honors Chemistry Science Fair awards were presented by Mrs. Hand, Mrs. Canning, and Mr. Tonero.  After weeks of hard work, groups and individuals were honored with many different awards. They each had the opportunity to be named with the honorable mention spot, third place, second place, or first place.

All the students that were honored on this night represent the academic success that Saint Rose High School students possess.  Congratulations to all the new members of the Language Honors Society, those recognized for their devotion to the Laboratory Assistants, and all those who succeeded in 2018 Science Fair!

AP Exams are COMING

The A.P. exams are approaching quickly, but don’t let that stress you out! A.P. exams are a great way for students to get a step ahead on college. Advanced Placement classes are college-level courses for high school students to take. During the course of the school year, the class prepares students for an exam in May that has the possibility of granting college credits. The A.P. exams begin May 7th to the 11th and continues into the next week from the 14th to the 18th. With the time creeping up quick, the Juniors and Seniors involved in A.P. may be feeling stressed out and unprepared, but there is no need!

As the school year winds to an end, it may seem easy to get off track on schoolwork and harder to pay attention to the information. However, the A.P. curriculum does not stop for time and these last pieces of learning are still as important to what was taught last month. Stay focused and on top of homework to be one step ahead on the studying for the exam.

Although you may still need to be concentrating on learning the last bits of material, it is vital to start reviewing the information you learned throughout the school year. The idea seems daunting, but remember that you have seen the information before and your teacher has prepared you well. There are many different ways to review. Break the information down into steps and the mountain of coursework will appear much smaller. There are A.P. review books available online to buy that summarize the course and highlight the important information. The books may also include practice exams styled similar to the actual exam to help prepare you, or you can find some on College Board’s website. It is important and incredibly helpful to become familiar with the format of the test. Find out if an essay is required, and if so, practice writing one in order to prepare. As a Senior who took A.P. exams last year and will be this year, my personal favorite way to review is with Youtube videos. There are several helpful review videos online that breakdown the information in a simple way. If you are taking the APUSH exam, check out “JoczProductions” and “Adam Norris” on Youtube for helpful chapter by chapter reviews of the textbook. Currently, I am preparing for the Biology exam using “Bozeman Science” videos, in which they explain and demonstrate difficult subjects in an easy way. As well as review videos, there are also summaries and reviews of chapters on your coursework online that I found very helpful. Find the best way to study that works for you, and start! These exams can change your college experience in an incredibly positive way, so try your best, but remember to not focus your entire life on the test. Stay well-rested and do not worry! I know you will do great. I am sending all those taking A.P. exams prayers to get the 5! Good luck!

What is Kairos?

Each grade at Saint Rose High School is given a set mandatory retreat yearly that they must attend. These retreats are meant to give students an opportunity to connect with God on a deeper level. Kairos, however is special non mandatory spiritual retreat that is offered to all Saint Rose Seniors and some select juniors. The trip takes place three times every school year, with one being held in the fall, the winter, and the spring. It is a four day, three night retreat that is meant to help connect students with each other and God. However, one thing about Kairos that you will figure out immediately when attending Saint Rose is that everything that goes on and what is talked about during the Kairos retreat is a secret. No one is allowed to share what  happened during the event with those who have never attended.

Kairos is something that most students tend to look forward to throughout their four years at Saint Rose High School. It is also something that is highly recommended not only by the students who have gone prior, but also by the teachers. Some have even said that it may be one of the best things Saint Rose has to offer the students. Senior Lauren Taylor has described her experience on Kairos as, “ Something that allowed me to take a break from the pressures and stress of high school and really gave me the opportunity to get closer to all of my friends who attended and form new relationships with others I did not know as well.” Kairos is an experience that may not be for everyone but it is something highly recommended and each student who decides to go will get out what they put in. So within the next few years of high school  attend Kairos because you may return with a different outlook.

Sports Update

This upcoming week, the Varsity Boys and Girls Track and Field teams will be heading to the University of Pennsylvania to compete in the annual Penn Relays. Saint Rose has participated in this meet for many years now, and the meet has become one of the biggest and most important of the season. This year they will be held on April 26th, 27th, and 28th, with the girls running on Thursday, and the boys running on Friday and Saturday. Our runners report to Red Brick at 6:30 in the morning to drive to Pennsylvania and be there for the first race. This year, the team is participating in the 100 meter and the 400 meter relays against teams from all around the world. The stadium becomes packed to the brim with food stands, games, and many chances to meet up with coaches and friends. The relays include high school and college students, with the United States National Team running also. Nike and the USA team are two of the sponsors of the event that provide many stands for fans to buy clothes and merchandise. The girls and boys are split into three different days to help the meet be completed quicker, and they are free to explore the stadium and all the interesting activities that are provided for them. Afterwards, the team goes out to dinner courtesy of Coach Casagrande, and if they are lucky, they get some ice cream too before the ride home. The Penn Relays is very important to our track team, so make sure to wish them luck once the days get closer!

Junior Prom

As everyone knows, Prom is one of the events most looked forward to by many high schoolers. On the night of April 15, the Saint Rose Junior Class gathered at Buona Sera Palazzo in Ocean Township for their Prom. Although the day was gray and rainy, the gloomy weather did not seem to put a damper on the Junior class and their expectations for four hours of fun and dancing. Fiona Cinquegrana reflected on the night, “It was so much fun! I had a blast dancing all night with my friends. It’s always a good time when you can get dressed up and fancy.” A component of what made the night perfect was the excellent food, provided by the catering company based out of Palazzo. When asked, many students highlighted the mashed potato and mac n cheese bars, as well the cocktail hour preceding the DJ and dancing. The change of venue from Waterview Pavilion to Palazzo was a key factor in what made Prom so special for the Juniors. The class as a whole expressed satisfaction with the new location despite initially being unsure of what Palazzo would offer.

The theme of the night was “Enchanted Night”, and the Prom as a whole certainly reflected this. The simple yet statement decorations, including props for pictures, helped to set the mood of excitement and wonder in the room. Perhaps one of the most exciting parts of the evening, besides dressing up and dancing with friends, is the announcement of Prom King and Queen. The Prom Court consisted of Jennifer Bassi, Julia Benol, Gianna DeMaio, Juliana Vivenzio, and Emily Walker for the girls, and Zachary Alseika, Brendan Considine, Robert Rothery, Joey Urspruch, and Tom Zoino for the boys. At the end of the night, their names were announced and Anna Turning and Matt Forlenza were declared prom King and Queen, to the delight of everyone. Julia Benol felt that being on the Prom Court was “a huge honor, and I was so excited to see that Anna and Matt had won!” Overall, the night was a huge success and marks a big milestone in high school events, and the Junior class will undoubtedly remember this night for years to come!

Mr. Saint Rose

Attention Senior boys: Come sign up for the upcoming Mr. Saint Rose Pageant! Thanks to our Student Council board, this great and entertaining event will be taking place on April 25th in thegym. It is an assembly for the entire school to partake in, therefore, they will be taking time from their club to enjoy one of their last events here at Saint Rose this year. The pageant will hopefully consist of 12 senior boys who are willing and excited to sign up to compete head to head for a potential prize! They will be judged by their very own student council panel and the entire event is hosted by the Executive President Ethan Coakley. He states, “We were really looking for an event that we know everyone in the grade was going to love and laugh at the entire time. Our days left here at Saint Rose are becoming very limited and this is just one more memory for us to always remember as we all move on to the next four years. We have been planning it for weeks now and we can’t wait to see what all the contestants have to offer!”

The pageant will consist of three main categories in which the contestants will try their best to convince the judges and the rest of their senior class that they are deserving of the crown. It will all start off with the boys wearing their most stylish outfit and looking their best with the formal wear event. The judges will consider their attire as well as how they show it off. Next comes the talent portion, which we know Saint Rose contains a lot of. They will perform a unique talent of their own that they believe will be impressive enough for the crowd and judges! Finally, the panel will challenge them with questions in which the contestants will have to think of respectful and educated answers right on the spot in order to awe each person in the room. The boys definitely can’t be shy! They have to let it all out there and make the best of it!

We have a lot of big personalities in the senior class and it’s amazing to see them being given the opportunity to share it with everyone! One individual who is incredibly ecstatic about this upcoming event is senior Connor Mckeown. “I am definitely signing up! I’m looking forward to showing the crowd my indomitable spirit, my soft side, as well as my sub-par voice. It going to be a lot of fun and I’m just going to try and get a good laugh out of it! There is gonna be some stiff competition but I hope to come out on top!” The St. Rose community can’t wait to be humored by their fellow students in this first time pageant at Saint Rose. Be sure to spread the word and thank the Student Council for making this happen as the last special event!

College Decisions

Making college decisions are a significant but exciting transformation into the next chapter of our future. Commiting to a college takes a tremendous amount of time, research, and stress, but leads to monumental feelings of relief. One of the latest Saint Rose High School students to experience this relief is Taylor Reilly, who will be attending Stevens Institute of Technology this fall.

SRHS Senior Taylor Reilly is a resident of Wall Township. She went to Allenwood Elementary school and then Wall Intermediate school before deciding to pursue a catholic education at Saint Rose. At SRHS, Taylor participated in many clubs and activities, including Tennis and Ambassadors club. She is currently the manager of the 2018 SRHS Varsity Boys Tennis Team. Throughout the last four years at Saint Rose, she has shown astounding effort while taking six diverse Advanced-Placement courses.

Stevens Institute of Technology is a private, coeducational research university in Hoboken, New Jersey. It was founded in 1870 and the campus is approximately 55 acres large. In the 2018 fall semester, Stevens Institute had a total undergraduate enrollment of 3,021. There is a satellite campus in Washington DC, and is a part of the NCAA Division III. The Technology Institution is primarily known for its intense researching, engineering, science, and management programs. Their mission statement is “to inspire, nurture and educate leaders in tomorrow’s technology-centric environment while contributing to the solution of the most challenging problems of our time.”

Taylor decided to commit to Stevens Institute of Technology for many different reasons. Most prominently, she concluded that Stevens has the best engineering program of all the schools that she applied to. Also, they offer students an abundance of opportunities for internships, including cooperative education, or co-op, programs. Taylor also loves the location of Stevens, located in the lively city of Hoboken and just across the river from NYC. Although the area surrounding Stevens is overwhelmingly energetic, Taylor is excited for the small community and collaborative environment inside the campus.

At Stevens Institute of Technology, Taylor will be majoring in biomedical engineering. She is looking forward to participating in the 4+1 co-op internship program, club tennis, ski club, habitat for humanity, and studying abroad in Spain. Taylor is ecstatic to become a Stevens Institute of Technology “Duck” and begin the next chapter of her life, but will always feel home at Saint Rose.

Prayer for Teens

Many teenagers are in a current state of confusion or excitement due to the choices they are making in regards to their futures. For instance, at this time many Seniors are in the process of making extremely important choices regarding their college decisions. Some may be confused, nervous, or even excited for this next big step in their life. However, each teen may need reassurance or guidance to help them with these difficult decisions which are shaping their future.

Instead of worrying or stressing over this important time of your life, you can most definitely turn your focus to God and allow him to help you during this process. One great way to reflect on your choices and important life decisions is to talk to God through prayer. The following is a common prayer for teens when in need of guidance or reassurance in their lives:

“The LORD says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you” (Psalm 32:8).

“Heavenly Father,
I know you are the great counselor! I am in need of guidance, for I don’t know what to do. Help me to do what You want done in this situation. Please send someone to show me the steps I need to take. I depend on You, and I thank You, Heavenly Father. I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

This is a wonderful prayer, allowing all focus to go towards God and his ability to help us through any troubles we may be having in our lives. If you are feeling stressed or worried throughout your college decision process or just during school in general, you may find a sense of peace or comfort in saying this prayer to God.

Catholic Education

Many of us here at Saint Rose have been in Catholic school since we could remember, but what does having a Catholic education really mean to us? Why do so many people wish they could be in our shoes and walk the halls with us instead of in a public school?

My answer to that is simple; we go throughout our days connected to God and living out the privileges He has given to us. Many outsiders either are intrigued by our school or wish they could take part in it. Our community of students and staff are comparable to a big family that are all joined together by our love for God. All of us here at Saint Rose are given such great opportunities to succeed in our class work and in other activities like sports and clubs. I feel with being in a Catholic school our focus is to do well all 4 years and really focus on the core subjects to become prepared for college. Many of the public schools are much bigger and struggle with getting all of the students on board to do well. Since we are a much smaller community, there is help everywhere to stay on track and to get through these 4 years in the best way possible. Also with the small size, the school spirit is impeccable; we all truly love to be apart of this school and are thankful for this opportunity that God has lead us to. The staff here are just like our close family, as they wish to see us do well and also try to form a closer relationship with us. God has called us all to contribute to this school and its legacy and to hopefully leave the mark that He has been looking for.
