Senior Cheerleaders

Behind every great school’s basketball team is an amazing cheerleading team, and here at Saint Rose, our cheerleading team is exactly that. On Thursday, February 22 our team’s senior cheerleaders were honored for all of their time, hard work, and dedication that they have put in throughout their four years here at Saint Rose High School. The seniors this year include Amanda Herro, Dara Johnson, Julia Slattery, Addy Hood, Molly Richards, and co-captains Emily Brown and Karyn Capotorto. Their senior day began with the girls walking into school to find all of their lockers had been decorated by the the freshman and junior cheerleaders in Saint Rose colors as well as pictures of them and friends throughout their season.

Next, throughout their school day the underclassmen and coaches decorated Ms. Mantlick’s class room with all different kinds of goodies and balloons to celebrate. They also had balloons and decorated signs for each of the seniors hung up in the gym. They then welcomed the seniors after everything was completed to start the celebration and take pictures. Then they went to the game where they cheered, and performed, and were honored during the halftime of the game with senior boys on the basketball team. There, each senior was called out one by one and had the opportunity to take a picture with each of their families and at this moment everyone in the gym could feel just how happy and appreciated the seniors had felt by all of the smiles on their faces. Lastly, at the end of the game the basketball team and cheer team went on to pray together for the last time and the boys gave all of the cheerleaders flowers as a thank you for all that they have done for the team throughout the year. Congratulations Seniors!

Beauty & the Beast

Last week, our Theater Department showcased their Spring Musical, telling the popular Disney story of Beauty and the Beast. The cast and crew have been working with Mrs. Kain and their choreographer since the Fall to get ready for their long awaited performances.

The play was held at the Jersey Shore Arts Center in Ocean Grove for three consecutive nights. The shows were held on March 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, with a dress rehearsal the first day and a matinee at 1 p.m. the last day. The dress rehearsal was put on for Saint Rose Grammar School so they could get in on the experience too.

The cast worked very hard to tell this classic story in the best way for their families and classmates. Tori Reich, a junior, played the main role of Belle and did an impeccable job. Her voice echoed throughout the theater and she never once stuttered over her lines. Alec Kuncken, a senior, played the role of the Beast, and made sure to embody the feelings and hardships that the Beast went through in the story. His hard work to get the right persona paid off, especially during his solo performances. Evan Cantlon and Joe Hickey, both seniors, played Gaston and Lefou, the villains in the story. Since Joe and Evan and real life best friends, their performance was flawless and easygoing.  You could tell how much fun they were having together up on stage. AnnieRose DiMirro, another senior, played Mrs.Potts, and got the privilege to sing the famous song Beauty and the Beast during the dancing scene with Belle and the Beast. Dillion Groh, a junior, played Lumiere the candlestick, and perfected his French accent for the role. Gavin Springer, a freshman, played Cogsworth the clock beside Dillon. Madison Cancro, a sophomore, played the feather duster, and Jada Weedon, a junior, played the wardrobe. Mr. Appleyard and Mrs. Carton were in charge of stage and makeup crew, which did an amazing job with moving props and getting everyone ready for the show. Mrs. Fallon was in charge of all of the amazing costumes!

We applaud Mrs. Kain and all who participated in this years Spring Musical for putting on an incredible show, and one that did the story of Beauty and the Beast justice and showcased the talent we have here at St.Rose.

The Lenten Season

Lent is an exciting season of celebration, reflection, and preparation before Easter. Lent includes the holidays of Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, Palm Sunday, Easter, and more. On Ash Wednesday, the first day of lent, Ashes are put on believers’ foreheads as a sign of repentance. Easter celebrates the end of lent and the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. Although Lent is a time to praise and rejoice in Jesus’ sacrifices for us, Lent is observed by fasting from both food and festivities.

During Lent, Christians also worship Christ’s sacrifice and journey into the desert for 40 days. Although Easter celebrates the resurrection of Jesus after his death on the cross, Lent also commemorates the events leading up to Christ’s crucifixion. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, “The purpose of Lent is to provide that purification by weaning men from sin and selfishness through self-denial and prayer, by creating in them the desire to do God’s will and to make His kingdom come by making it come first of all in their hearts.”

When asked for her personal definition of lent, Sam Zebick, senior, stated, “In my opinion, lent is a time of sacrificing, just as Jesus sacrificed his life for own our good. Lent is a time of reflection in which we can focus on bettering ourselves the way Jesus asks of us. We should take this time to focus on our wants and desires and limit them as a demonstration of sacrifice.”

Another aspect of Lent is giving up something to honor and symbolize Jesus’ own sacrifices to us. This year, I am sacrificing soda. Although giving up soda is obviously not as significant as Jesus giving his life for us, it is a symbol of Christ’s loving sacrifice.

Don’t forget to sacrifice something and appreciate Jesus this Lenten season!
